Caring for Family Heirlooms

When: Thursday, December 12th from 10:30 am to 1 pm

Where: Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre - 1100 Hwy 3B, Junction of Hwys 3B & 22

Entry by donation - coffee/tea & treats will be provided

Join our collections and archives staff for a 2.5-hour hands-on workshop on how best to care for your family heirlooms.

In this workshop, we'll cover:

  • Packing Textiles - Safely store your precious heirloom fabrics and garments

  • Making Padded Hangers - Keep your clothing items in pristine condition

  • Caring for Photos - Tips for cleaning, organizing, and protecting your family photo collection

  • Document Repair - Simple techniques to mend and preserve your paper treasures

Whether you're looking to protect family photos or safeguard your grandmother’s wedding dress, this workshop will provide valuable skills to ensure your heirlooms remain in the best shape possible. You can bring documents from home to repair or you can practice on some pieces from the museum’s education collection.

Genealogy

When: Thursday, November 21st from 1pm to 4pm

Where: Rossland Public Library (2180 Columbia Avenue)

Entry by donation - coffee/tea & treats will be provided

Join genealogist and long-time RMDC volunteer, Linda Gomez, as she leads you through how to best approach your genealogy project, make the most of your sources, and organize your information.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:

- Effectively utilize various genealogy resources

- Validate your information

- Organize your information into visual timelines

- Bring your family stories to life!

 

Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, this session is perfect for everyone. Bring your materials, questions, and a passion for uncovering your family’s past!

We have developed Discovery Kits for seniors to borrow! These kits are geared towards seniors and encouraging them to remember and discuss their lives with their friends and loved ones. Each kit comes with a variety of objects, photographs, and archival reproductions related to the topic, as well as prompt questions and activities to get the nostalgia flowing!

South Kootenay Seniors

‘South Kootenay Seniors’ is the regional age-friendly initiative between the City of Trail, Village of Warfield and City of Rossland. The three communities are working together to support local seniors and business and organizations that provide services for seniors. On its website, you can find information on resources for seniors and upcoming events.


Rossland Age-Friendly

Rossland Age-friendly is a program run by the City of Rossland with the goal of helping people age well in our community. We are here to provide information and support local business and service groups that offer services or programs for seniors. We also run some activities to help fill in the gaps where we see a need such as organizing health and wellness workshops or social activities. Feedback and ideas are always welcome! BC211 Safe Seniors, Strong Communities

The Safe Seniors, Strong Communities program matches seniors (65+) who need support with non-medical essentials, to volunteers in their community who are willing to help.

Available services include:

  • Grocery shopping and delivery

  • Meal preparation and delivery

  • Prescription pickup and delivery

  • Phone and/or virtual friendly visits

When you register as a senior or a volunteer, your contact information is shared with the United Way’s Better at Home agencies. Those agencies make the connections between seniors and volunteers in the community.

Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy

Literacy programs for adults and seniors aim to strengthen and enhance the literacy skills that participants have gained throughout their lives.

We offer a wide variety of free programs that support the learning of:

  • reading

  • writing

  • numeracy

  • technology

  • workplace and other essential skills

 Adult and senior literacy programs are designed to focus on each participant's unique needs. Elevating literacy skills helps to open the doors to new opportunities whether it's finding employment, entering a training program or using digital technology. Building literacy skills builds confidence to step out and try something new.
